    Saeed Akhtar Mirza is one of the iconic directors of Indian Parallel Cinema who has won numerous awards for his work. Retired from Film-making he spends his time writing and is also known for his critically acclaimed novels such as AMMI: Letters to a Democratic Mother and The Monk, The Moor and Moses Ben Jalloun.

    NASEEM released in the year 1995 is a drama film that deals with the relationship between a 15 year old girl and her Grandfather and the communal situation surrounding their lives. Released to critical acclaim the Film went on to win the prestigious National Award for Best Director and The National Award for Best Screenplay for Saeed Akhtar Mirza. The movie is an important socio-political one that is most relevant to our times.

    The World Busk Day was held in Literati on the 14th of June 2013 in aid of Child’s Play Foundation. It was a fun filled evening with very talented and upcoming musicians such as Ashley Rego,  Jatan Rodrigues,  Ian De Noronha,  Clive Moraes,  Shannon Vaz,  Frederika Cotta and  Leo O Velho. The Kala Academy Choir led by Jean Kalangutkar were more than a pleasure to listen to. And Willy Franco, accomplished percussionist Lester Godinho, Darryl James Pereira , Jeffrey Manuel  and his lovely children Kathrin  and Kian all made the evening memorable.

    An introductory session to the game of Bridge by Amaresh Deshpande.  For those who missed it the last time around. I can tell you through my own experience that this is something which is a must do. Amaresh is not only a very good teacher but the version of the game he teaches is really great fun. It also really hones one's mathematical skills and children of 12 and above are most welcome to join in.

    On Gandhiji's death anniversary, we will be screening "Gandhi Lives" a 52 minute documentary film by Aruna Har Prasad. The film explores the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in modern India through professionals and ordinary people leaving the audience to decide whether Gandhi lives or not. The film was screened at the Indian Film Festival in Japan 2012 and the Foreign Correspondents Club at New Delhi.

    A two hour Introduction-to-Bridge is scheduled at Literati on Thursday, 17th January at 5 pm. (If you remember) please bring a pack of cards, a mat to sit on the lawn since table-space is at a premium and mosquito repellent. Children above 12 can participate too. Total inexperience with cards is absolutely okay.

    The book ORIGINS OF LOVE written by KISHWAR DESAI and published by Simon & Schuster was launched by WENDELL RODRICKS at Literati. The author has also written DARLINGJI and WITNESS THE NIGHT while Wendell is the author of MODA GOA and THE GREEN ROOM. The event was lively and well attended.

    It was followed by the Book Club at 8.15 p.m. where the book in discussion was The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes.

    Sudeep Chakravarti’s new book Highway 39: Journeys through a Fractured Land, published by HarperCollins, was launched at Literati by Sebastian Hongray and Nandita Haksar. This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Prava Rai.
    The book is set primarily in Nagaland and Manipur and is a non-fiction narrative which is gathering critical appreciation. The discussion was a first for Goa.

    Bulbul Sharma is a painter and writer. She has many books to her credit including My Sainted Aunts; Eating Women, Telling Tales etc. She has also written many children's books including The Children's Ramayana. She has been conducting art and storytelling workshops for children with special needs for 15 years.

    SUHAG SHIRODKAR the author of CAPTURED IN MINIATURE conducted a unique interactive workshop Appreciating Mughal Art for ages 10 onwards at Literati. This book was born of her conviction that children will delight in history if adults will bring it alive for them. In her workday, Suhag co-manages Teclarity, her technical documentation company. Suhag divides her time between India and California, but her heart is always in Goa. This is her first book.

    There was a reading of One Life to Ride – A Motorcycle Journey to the High Himalayas by the author Ajit Harisinghani. Ajit is a speech therapist in Pune who rode his Royal Enfield Motorcycle solo from Pune to Ladakh, Kargil and Srinagar. The book has received rave reviews from Indian and foreign magazines.

    Alma Freni conducted an un-cooking workshop called Raw Food and Well Being based on the Fit for Life philosophy which advocates only "living" or vegan food as being the conscious choice towards a healthier lifestyle. Alma is a living example of the philosophy and has been vegetarian for 34 of her 48 years.

    Literati played host to acclaimed psychoanalyst Dr. Sudhir Kakar along with Katharina Kakar in an interactive session based on their book The Indians: Portrait of a People. Dr. Sudhir Kakar is a well-known figure in the fields of cultural psychology and the psychology of religon, as well as a novelist. Katharina Kakar is a scholar of comparative religon and is also a writer. The book among other issues deals with what is a common Indian identity and issues of family, caste, sex, marriage etc.

    There was a reading by Zai Whitaker, who is an author of several children’s books including The Boastful Centipede and Other Creatures in Verse, Cobra in my Kitchen, Salim Ali for Schools, Andamans Boy and Kali and the Rat Snake. Zai is a teacher and writer. She has worked at the Chennai Snake Park and Crocodile Bank, and at Abacus Montessori School, Chennai. She has lived and taught in beautiful Kodaikanal for thirteen years. She is also part of a team that helps women of the Irula tribe of hunter-gatherers and snake catchers.

    There was poetry reading by Brian Mendonca at 5 pm. Brian read from his much-acclaimed debut volume of poems on Goa entitled 'Last Bus to Vasco: Poems from Goa'. 'Last Bus to Vasco' was launched at Vasco in April 2006. Poems like 'Mapusa Memories' 'Souza Lobo' 'Sonya' and 'Fr Joseph Rowland Salema' all owe their inspiration to Bardez and places like Mapusa, Calangute, Sinquerim and Siolim. Copies of the book priced at Rs 150 with audio CD of the poems in the poets own voice are available for sale.

    An Origami workshop was conducted by Master Shivaram. Master Shivaram has been conferred the "National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Field of Origami in June 2001, by the Min. of HRD, Govt. of India. He has published his original models as a book titled- “Fold in Fold Out -Origami Originals” and his original model Aris-Turtle was selected as a winner of the Origami by Children 2004 conducted by Origami USA.

    Literati opened its doors for the first time with a Reading by Isabel S. R. Vas, of excerpts from her play "Kator re Bhaji- Through Corridors of Power". The play is based on the life of Abbe Faria, the father of hypnotism, whose 250th birth anniversary was in May 2006.
